Color Palette Challenge: Soft Blue Eyes

I have art commission slots available for this type of art! They’re super limited so get one while you can!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Color Challenge! This week is the first one where I focus on using a limited palette rather than an arbitrary number of colors. I’ll pick that concept up in a later time, right now I want to play with colors and make more color sketches and illustrations of my webcomic. I picked Aurora this week since I hadn’t drawn her first design in quite some time. It’ll be quite some time before her second and third designs come into play so I can’t go too deep into spoiler territory for comic readers!

I used SutherlandArt’s Color Palette Challenge this week since it’s an overall pretty but mellow palette collection. I wanted to practice my digital art rendering and I happened to find SeaofDiamonds’ gorgeous modeling and I did my best integrate it to my own art style in Clip Studio Paint/Manga Studio 5. I’m happy with the features and tighter brush work from my last painting exercise!

I’ll see you all in a few for tonight’s Twitch Stream!

Materials

  • Manga Studio 5 / Clip Studio Paint
  • Wacom Bamboo Create tablet

Timelapse Tuesday #24: Playful Magpie

No prints but I do have watercolor art commission slots available!

Art Motivation

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s topic came about while planning for a mixed media art piece and to encourage practice with materials you might have bought but never used. I understand how much an investment art making can be and sometimes we buy something we believe so precious that we don’t dare use it. I’m very much like that most of the time, especially with my watercolors and oils.

At first, I only used the student grade materials and didn’t try out anything beyond that, even though I had perfectly good artist’s grade materials just sitting in storage looking pretty. The main problem with this mindset is if I never practiced with the better supplies, I would never understand how they actually worked so I would be wasting more money just buying what I thought I could work instead of just doing it! Eventually I got over that fear of “wasting” my supplies when I changed my mindset to “Any art made is progress” and it’s helped me keep a positive outlook towards my own process.

I do hope this video helps you get over that doubt and gets you motivated to create more!

Timelapse Tuesday #23: Little Coco

No prints of this since it was another gift! I do have Puppy Portraits available in my shop!

Art Process

hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week I’m sharing another of my first finished oil paintings! Like Luna, I used my Daler Rowney water soluble oil paints with Winsor Newton Fast-Dry medium (my go-to medium!). I really enjoy painting in this medium because of the creaminess of the paint and how long it takes to actually dry. These two pieces were very much planned out and I was able to do other work while they cured. If you’re curious to learn more about the paints I use, please check out this post!

I’ll see you all soon for the Oil Painting Art Stream after working on videos and digital commissions!

Materials

  • Art Alternatives 5″ x 7″ Canvas Board (+ 5 coats of gesso and sanded)
  • Daler Rowney Georgian Water Mixable Oil Paints
  • Winsor Newton Artisan Water Soluble Fast Dry Medium
  • Winsor Newton Artisan Water Soluble Satin Varnish

Timelapse Tuesday #22: Restless Remedy (Art Motivation)

No prints but I do have watercolor art commission slots available!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s video is the first in a long time that has voice over! I’ve decided to go with voice over because it’s more liberating to talk about the materials and has a little less editing time that I can focus on painting or planning streams! I’m trying to work more on my techniques and practice my fundamentals & motifs. I love how the layers look along with the few touches of ink and pencils. I wanted to explore fragmentation and Kintsukuroi the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with metals to create beautiful art.

Art Motivation

I got into a lot more detail in the video, but I wanted to talk about frustration and how perfectionism can contribute to it. In my experience, perfectionism is a double-edge sword: it helps me grow as an artist as well as keep me down. This particular sketchbook of mine is daunting because it’s not only large but, since it’s mixed media, I want to make the best I can make. After fighting against myself, I’ve decided to let go of perfection and just make art for its sake. I do my thumbnail sketches in my drawing pads or on my Bullet Journal, then transfer them to the sketchbook to paint on. I hope this video helps you in any way to keep making art!

See you in a few hours for tonight’s Art Stream!

Materials

  • Canson XL Mixed Media Sketchbook 8×10″
  • Kuretake Gansai Tambi 12 color set
  • Royal & Langnickel Round #8 Brush
  • Simply Simmons Round #10 Brush
  • GraphGear 500 Pencil 03 Lead

Timelapse Tuesday #21: Pink Hair Buns Portrait

No prints for this week but I do have commission slots OPEN for this art style!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! It’s been rather gloomy these few days in the studio so I decided I’ll be going (mostly) digital, with the exception of Thursday’s Traditional Art Stream. To kick off this week, I decided use a very popular color palette challenge I encountered a while back, the FallenZephyr’s 100 palette challenge. I honestly tried to find a link of the original post but they apparently deleted the page. You can still find it if you google it by name though. I chose this particular palette to work within very pastel colors and challenge myself to render effectively.

I also wanted to try out this technique I found a while back for digital paintings. It was a way to use sketches or  lineart and airbrushing to quickly work on an idea and model faster. I struggle with getting past the line stage (I have so many WIPs it’s not funny) so any technique that can help me render better and faster is always welcomed. This technique helped plan out the colors and contrasts fairly quickly so I could concentrate on modeling the tonal values.

I also struggle a lot with coming up with concepts and full illustrations. I put so much pressure on myself to come up new illustrations that works and I can publish that I end up giving myself creative block or I’m unhappy with the results…either way I’m not as productive as I’d like. So I’ve resolved to sketch and practice more and publish my WIPs rather than go for perfection.

Materials

  • Clip Studio Paint Pro / Manga Studio 5
  • Wacom Bamboo Create

Timelapse Tuesday #17: Poised Orbit

Check out this illustration HERE! I also have commission slots available if you’d like your own!

Art Process

Welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! I’ve been on a concept sketch kick along with my spring flower since I’ve returned to my paints, particularly my oils and gouache. Ever since getting my Toned paper book, I’ve been practicing my light modeling and tones so I can eventually transfer them to their proper supports and focus on the colors.

I wanted to play around with geometric motifs with flowers imposed upon them in a fun juxtaposition of forms for my illustrations. I like the concept of the language of flowers and how they’re associated with different cultures and meanings. For me, they provide hidden meaning along with the aesthetic elements. I also wanted to see how my gold pen would look on the paper.

Art Prints

I want to have a series of finished illustrations and paintings by summertime to start making prints. I’ve been thinking of releasing prints of my Shop, not just through RedBubble. I’m thinking of going for 7″ x 5″, 10″ x 8″ and 14″ x 11″ with some embellishments, like golden & silver inks. What do you think: which illustration do you like the most?

Materials

  • Colerase Pencils in Purple, Rose & Scarlet Red
  • Blick Studio Markers in 20% Cool and Warm Gray
  • Faber Castell PITT Markers in Cool and Warm Gray III
  • Strathmore Toned Paper
  • Uniball Signo Pen in White
  • Conté a Paris Pencil in White
  • Sakura Pigma Micron 05
  • Pilot Gold Ink Pen in Medium

New Original Drawing in Shop!

Hi everyone, I just finished and added this drawing to my Shop in between editing tomorrow’s video! I just picked up this big 9″ x 12″ toned paper book and I’ve been drawing on it to practice my art with no pressure to make an illustration or video; which in turns, helps me make more art for videos! I actually liked the sketch so much I transferred it to a canvas board to paint on these upcoming months for my “Anxious Flora” illustration series.

See you tomorrow for Timelapse Tuesday!
