Timelapse Tuesday #25: Say it with flowers

Original is up for Sale! Click HERE for the shop link! I also have art commission slots available in this art style!

Art Process & Motivation

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s illustration was a chance to work with my art markers again after not recording a complete YouTube video on them in quite some time! I wanted to be playful and illustrate the phrase “Say it with Flowers” with even more blooms!

I talk about keeping art fun and changing things up from a more serious process to something that is still challenging. I chose to go with a more graphic or comic style because I like high contrasts in my marker art. I took a quick break from watercolors so I wouldn’t worry too much on the layering and focus on the selection of colors. I wanted to render everything softly so I used my pastel markers as tonal values and only added the brighter colors as midtowns as needed. Overall I’m very happy with this simple illustration and I hope to make more soon!

I also wanted to add some gold ink details to make it extra nice and plan for a metallic print in the near future. I’ve been on a gold ink kick since last Thursday’s Twitch Stream when I added warm gold ink on my newest Twitch illustration.

Timelapse Tuesday #23: Little Coco

No prints of this since it was another gift! I do have Puppy Portraits available in my shop!

Art Process

hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week I’m sharing another of my first finished oil paintings! Like Luna, I used my Daler Rowney water soluble oil paints with Winsor Newton Fast-Dry medium (my go-to medium!). I really enjoy painting in this medium because of the creaminess of the paint and how long it takes to actually dry. These two pieces were very much planned out and I was able to do other work while they cured. If you’re curious to learn more about the paints I use, please check out this post!

I’ll see you all soon for the Oil Painting Art Stream after working on videos and digital commissions!

Materials

  • Art Alternatives 5″ x 7″ Canvas Board (+ 5 coats of gesso and sanded)
  • Daler Rowney Georgian Water Mixable Oil Paints
  • Winsor Newton Artisan Water Soluble Fast Dry Medium
  • Winsor Newton Artisan Water Soluble Satin Varnish

Timelapse Tuesday #20: Luna’s Portrait

No prints this week, this portrait was made as a surprise gift for her mom! I do have puppy portraits on my SHOP!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! It’s episode #20 and I’m finally talking about my newest favorite medium, water soluble oil paint! The reason I took so long to getting videos out on this medium is because these pieces are super experimental for me and I need to practice a lot until my skills are up to my standards. This is the first finished piece I was able to record and edit since most of my oils are still works-in-process. Luna the Schnauzer was painted between February and March, with at least 2 weeks of drying time to let the paints cure.

Water soluble oil paints are fairly new to the art market (compared to other mediums) and thankfully there are a lot of brands out there to choose. I first went with Reeves’ brand of water-miscible paints and I liked the idea of longer dry times enough to move to higher quality paint. My second (and current) set is a mish-mash of colors from Daler Rowney Water Mixable Georgian and Williamsburg Oils. The first came from a fellow artist’s recommendation and the latter came from a lovely sample pack I was gifted for participating in a local art event. What I enjoy the most from this medium is how easy it is to clean up afterwards. I pour my dirty water into a large glass container with napkins to absorb the water and once that’s full of dried paint, I’ll take it to my community’s waste management.

Behold, my squiggly cursive writing in my mixed-media book!

To accelerate my drying times, keep the creamy paint consistency and be able to work with non-water soluble paint, I add a little of Winsor & Newton Fast Dry painting medium to my mixes. My paint layers dry within days (if thin) or weeks (if thick), giving me ample time to adjust any mistakes. I usually put my WIPs to dry on my studio wall be it by hanging them or with a little velcro strip on the back. I’ll be working on more paintings as I keep practicing and learning!

See you soon for tonight’s stream!

Timelapse Tuesday #17: Poised Orbit

Check out this illustration HERE! I also have commission slots available if you’d like your own!

Art Process

Welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! I’ve been on a concept sketch kick along with my spring flower since I’ve returned to my paints, particularly my oils and gouache. Ever since getting my Toned paper book, I’ve been practicing my light modeling and tones so I can eventually transfer them to their proper supports and focus on the colors.

I wanted to play around with geometric motifs with flowers imposed upon them in a fun juxtaposition of forms for my illustrations. I like the concept of the language of flowers and how they’re associated with different cultures and meanings. For me, they provide hidden meaning along with the aesthetic elements. I also wanted to see how my gold pen would look on the paper.

Art Prints

I want to have a series of finished illustrations and paintings by summertime to start making prints. I’ve been thinking of releasing prints of my Shop, not just through RedBubble. I’m thinking of going for 7″ x 5″, 10″ x 8″ and 14″ x 11″ with some embellishments, like golden & silver inks. What do you think: which illustration do you like the most?

Materials

  • Colerase Pencils in Purple, Rose & Scarlet Red
  • Blick Studio Markers in 20% Cool and Warm Gray
  • Faber Castell PITT Markers in Cool and Warm Gray III
  • Strathmore Toned Paper
  • Uniball Signo Pen in White
  • Conté a Paris Pencil in White
  • Sakura Pigma Micron 05
  • Pilot Gold Ink Pen in Medium

New Mixed Media Drawing in Shop!

I just finished this new mixed-media drawing and added it to my ShopI’m really enjoying this paper a lot, but it’s still big for concept sketches so I split a page into two 9″ x 6″ sheets to work on more pieces. I’ll be transferring this one as well and work it in oils (no more, I have a backlog of like 6 pieces in different stages!). I’m currently editing the timelapse footage of this drawing for Timelapse Tuesday as well; busy weekend!

Art Posts, Art Streams, General Updates

Thank you for watching the Art Stream (Apr. 21. 2017)

Thank you to everyone who joined in and watched my Oil painting and Watercolor Art Stream last night! You can find the full stream with live commentary on my Twitch Channel (yes, I did overcome my shyness) where I talk about water-soluble oils, the safety concerns that they minimize from traditional oils and plenty of tips about my art making! I even managed to draw a quick Prompto and Noctis (from Final Fantasy XV) as my cool down doodles!

Twitch Schedule for now is:

  • Tuesdays (7pm-9pm): Digital Art with Clip Studio Paint (Manga Studio 5) or Paint Tool SAI.
  • Thursdays (7pm-9pm): Traditional Art Stream

I would love to stream more but for now, this schedule works wonderfully. Let me know if this time schedule works for you or if there’s another time I should try!

See you all later today for the Comic Update!
