Art Process & Update

Hi everyone! Today’s blogpost is a bit of a hodpodge of several topics so let’s get to it! I must confess I took yesterday off from YouTube and blogging to paint for myself and build more stock for my Pet Portraits Collection and opened up a Special Art Commissions page for them! It was nice to just focus on making art and not worry about editing videos or comic pages.

I apologize for not updating on the Twitch Stream yesterday as well, it’s still going at 7:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It was reinvigorating to talk with people and draw the nights away.

I’ll be taking the month-long semi-break from the webcomic (that I never took haha) and taking some time to restructure YouTube content so it’s not so exhausting. I’ll keep on blogging and updating you all, I’ll just be a little more casual about it rather than being so rigid about the content!

As always, thank you so much for reading!

Timelapse Tuesday #24: Playful Magpie

No prints but I do have watercolor art commission slots available!

Art Motivation

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s topic came about while planning for a mixed media art piece and to encourage practice with materials you might have bought but never used. I understand how much an investment art making can be and sometimes we buy something we believe so precious that we don’t dare use it. I’m very much like that most of the time, especially with my watercolors and oils.

At first, I only used the student grade materials and didn’t try out anything beyond that, even though I had perfectly good artist’s grade materials just sitting in storage looking pretty. The main problem with this mindset is if I never practiced with the better supplies, I would never understand how they actually worked so I would be wasting more money just buying what I thought I could work instead of just doing it! Eventually I got over that fear of “wasting” my supplies when I changed my mindset to “Any art made is progress” and it’s helped me keep a positive outlook towards my own process.

I do hope this video helps you get over that doubt and gets you motivated to create more!

3-Color Challenge: Spellcaster Prince

No prints of this piece but I do have commission slots available in this style!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Color Challenge! This is a rather short video since I wanted to practice more chili style illustrations and brush up on my cel-shading technique. This week has been a little more busy than usual so my videos have been a little on the short side so I can keep up with all the content due in each day. This color challenge also marks the end of the strict structure of the series. I’ve found myself struggling to come up with more art with my webcomic; I’m actually running out of characters to draw without heading into spoiler territory, go figure! So I decided to stop adhering so strictly to 1 to 3 colors and focus more on the color choices and palettes. This doesn’t mean I’m abandoning the concept, it just means I’ll be working with more colors in some illustrations. The main ideas of this series are to practice restraint, draw more Nightmare’s Tragedies illustrations and finally have fun!

I’ll see you all in a bit for tonight’s stream! It might running a little late tonight, still have a lot of prep work to do!

Timelapse Tuesday #21: Pink Hair Buns Portrait

No prints for this week but I do have commission slots OPEN for this art style!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! It’s been rather gloomy these few days in the studio so I decided I’ll be going (mostly) digital, with the exception of Thursday’s Traditional Art Stream. To kick off this week, I decided use a very popular color palette challenge I encountered a while back, the FallenZephyr’s 100 palette challenge. I honestly tried to find a link of the original post but they apparently deleted the page. You can still find it if you google it by name though. I chose this particular palette to work within very pastel colors and challenge myself to render effectively.

I also wanted to try out this technique I found a while back for digital paintings. It was a way to use sketches or  lineart and airbrushing to quickly work on an idea and model faster. I struggle with getting past the line stage (I have so many WIPs it’s not funny) so any technique that can help me render better and faster is always welcomed. This technique helped plan out the colors and contrasts fairly quickly so I could concentrate on modeling the tonal values.

I also struggle a lot with coming up with concepts and full illustrations. I put so much pressure on myself to come up new illustrations that works and I can publish that I end up giving myself creative block or I’m unhappy with the results…either way I’m not as productive as I’d like. So I’ve resolved to sketch and practice more and publish my WIPs rather than go for perfection.

Timelapse Tuesday #19: Tropical Mermaid

I have Art Commissions Slots OPEN in this style! Let me know if you’d like prints of this piece!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week I’m working with the theme of Mermaids (it is Mermay after all!). I was getting tired of using the same cool palette in my last few pieces so I decided to use colors in the warmer side of the color wheel. I usually cool down my colors with alizarin crimson and ultramarine, so I focused on only using them to darken the cad yellow and vermillion. I also tested out a new way to color skin that was more reliable by adding Chinese white to Burnt Sienna and modifying it with other colors. I’m slowly adding pre-mixed colors in my repertoire (how scandalous!) by making sure to mix them and integrate them with the composition.

I’m also transitioning cameras! I used to record all of my videos with my iPhone and the Hyperlapse app. This worked for quite a while but I was getting frustrated with the 45 minute limit in between videos and taking up space in my phone. My beau had a Logitec c270 that he wasn’t using, so I started experimenting with longer recording sessions. To be fair, I needed to modify the camera lens so I could manually focus (thus voiding any warranty it might have had). Fortunately, my overhead set up works perfectly with the camera so, aside from a long cord attached to my laptop, I can record for as long as I want! You might be thinking “why not use a full camera?” and my answer is, space is at a premium on my studio desk and I rather use that space to hold my materials.

See you later for tonight’s Digital Art Stream post!
