Art Process & Update

Hi everyone! Today’s blogpost is a bit of a hodpodge of several topics so let’s get to it! I must confess I took yesterday off from YouTube and blogging to paint for myself and build more stock for my Pet Portraits Collection and opened up a Special Art Commissions page for them! It was nice to just focus on making art and not worry about editing videos or comic pages.

I apologize for not updating on the Twitch Stream yesterday as well, it’s still going at 7:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It was reinvigorating to talk with people and draw the nights away.

I’ll be taking the month-long semi-break from the webcomic (that I never took haha) and taking some time to restructure YouTube content so it’s not so exhausting. I’ll keep on blogging and updating you all, I’ll just be a little more casual about it rather than being so rigid about the content!

As always, thank you so much for reading!

Color Palette Challenge: Fateful Threads

I have art commission slots available for this type of art! They’re limited so get one while you can!

Art Process

Hi everyone, welcome back to the Color Challenge! Today’s video was a quick exercise in actually using the colors in SutherlandArt’s Color Palette Challenge exclusively. I think it went rather well and I got to work out Lita’s main ability before drawing it in the comic. I really liked the #12 palette for this character because I could render her features without needing to add extra colors. Lita is actually one of my oldest OCs from way back when and I’ve kept her designs pretty much intact throughout the years.

Funny thing is, I’m starting to run out of characters for this illustration series for the time being! Most of the other characters head straight into spoiler territory, so I’m quite hesitant in drawing them before they’re properly introduced. I’ll probably end up drawing them just to work out their designs and the like (who doesn’t want an excuse to build their world?).

I’ll see you all in a bit for tonight’s Art Stream!

Color Palette Challenge: Soft Blue Eyes

I have art commission slots available for this type of art! They’re super limited so get one while you can!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Color Challenge! This week is the first one where I focus on using a limited palette rather than an arbitrary number of colors. I’ll pick that concept up in a later time, right now I want to play with colors and make more color sketches and illustrations of my webcomic. I picked Aurora this week since I hadn’t drawn her first design in quite some time. It’ll be quite some time before her second and third designs come into play so I can’t go too deep into spoiler territory for comic readers!

I used SutherlandArt’s Color Palette Challenge this week since it’s an overall pretty but mellow palette collection. I wanted to practice my digital art rendering and I happened to find SeaofDiamonds’ gorgeous modeling and I did my best integrate it to my own art style in Clip Studio Paint/Manga Studio 5. I’m happy with the features and tighter brush work from my last painting exercise!

I’ll see you all in a few for tonight’s Twitch Stream!

3-Color Challenge: Spellcaster Prince

No prints of this piece but I do have commission slots available in this style!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Color Challenge! This is a rather short video since I wanted to practice more chili style illustrations and brush up on my cel-shading technique. This week has been a little more busy than usual so my videos have been a little on the short side so I can keep up with all the content due in each day. This color challenge also marks the end of the strict structure of the series. I’ve found myself struggling to come up with more art with my webcomic; I’m actually running out of characters to draw without heading into spoiler territory, go figure! So I decided to stop adhering so strictly to 1 to 3 colors and focus more on the color choices and palettes. This doesn’t mean I’m abandoning the concept, it just means I’ll be working with more colors in some illustrations. The main ideas of this series are to practice restraint, draw more Nightmare’s Tragedies illustrations and finally have fun!

I’ll see you all in a bit for tonight’s stream! It might running a little late tonight, still have a lot of prep work to do!

2-Color Challenge: “Heiress” (Clip Studio Paint)

No prints available, but I do have commission slots available for this type of art!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to the bi-weekly Color Challenge! Like I remarked on Tuesday’s Postit’s been a gloomy and rather sunless week at my studio so I decided to move most of my art making to digital with the exception of tonight’s Art StreamI had no idea what to do since I was practicing my watercolors on my sketchbook and I wasn’t quite sure who I would draw this week. I wanted to focus more on the lighting and the effects so after sketching Lambda, Daikonran’s only daughter with the late Aurora. Her story begins in Chapter 2 alongside Lita’s but they’re mentioned in Chapter 1 as Daikonran’s motivations. In a way, she’s their heir and carries both her parents’ legacies. What they are will be revealed later 😉 !

I wanted to push the complementaries as far as I could, using only shades of blue and orange and only adding black, gray and white when needed. I’m honestly really happy with how the colors turned out and how the modeling looks! I’m proud of the way the shadows cooled down the farther they were from the light source and how the spell glows with some texture.

1-Color Challenge: Dark Castle

I have Art Commissions Slots OPEN in this style! Let me know if you’d like prints of this piece!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome to this month’s first Color Challenge. I apologize for the blog delay, I was working on other illustrations and setting up for tonight’s Traditional Art Stream @ 7:30 or 8pm EST. This week I decided to push my drawing (ie make my afternoon a few degrees more difficult) by working in perspective and start creating the next Chapter’s building designs. In the video I explain why I chose a skewered 2-point perspective for this type of worm’s point-of-view instead of using a 5-point/fish eye.

My main objective in this illustration was to work in tonal values so I had to figure out a way to draw a relatively correct structure without spending too much time on it. What I focused on was creating depth with the central vanishing point and height with the top point. Aside from a undergrad class just on perspective drawing, I’ve also read a lot of books on the subject. My current go-to is “Vanishing Point: Perspective for Comics from the ground up” by Jason Cheeseman-Meyer, which covers most environmental drawing. It’s a bit lacking on the perspective on the human figure but overall a good review book.

After drawing everything, I decided to go with ink pens rather than my usual brush pen to keep the lines uniform. I used the brush only to separate Daikonran’s form from the flowers and the structure. I added some cool red to add some values and forms without resorting to more linework (especially since my brush pen had just run out of ink)!

  • Prismacolor Colerase Pencil in Gray
  • Sakura Pigma Micron in 03 & 05
  • Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Color Challenge #4: Wilted Ghosts

Check this illustration out on RedBubble HERE! Note: I marked it as Mature to be on the safe side because bloooood and spoooooky!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to the Color Challenge series for April! I continued on with using the main characters of my webcomic and it’s been fun pairing certain characters with color combinations and symbols. This week I wanted to use my deepest red marker for Nokuru Heba, the doomed medium in Tragedy (Chapter) III along with his companion ghost, Mira. I used wilted flowers to address his state by the time the comic starts and simple lines as spears to make an allusion to the betrayals he suffered.

I had a lot of fun with the high contrast in this piece and the textures I did on the flowers and background. Red is a good color to do in 1 color or 3-color challenges for me; I’ll probably do another illustration in a warmer red marker to give another go!

I’m available for Marker Commissions like these and more! I’ll be working out the Twitch stream feeds this afternoon so there might be a stream today! I’ll post a quick update when it’s live!

See you all tomorrow for Comic Update and on April 27 for the next Color Challenge!
