Art Process & Motivation

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s illustration was product of several art attempts before I settled on this one.  I go into more details in the video, but I went through at least 3 ideas, both in traditional and digital media, before I decided to break out my acrylic paints and give them a try after months of struggling with oil paints.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the buttery consistency and loooong open time of water-soluble oils, but setting up for a oil painting session takes quite a bit of prep work that I wasn’t planning on doing if I wanted to make my weekly deadline! I found myself enjoying acrylic paints for the first time in months, so I hope I’ll be doing more to balance out my content!

I’m still trying to figure out a good content management & schedule strategy so I can have more leeway for more experimental illustrations, Patreon and blogposts.

Timelapse Tuesday #31: 100 YouTube Subs! & Art Talk

Check out my Patreon for more content related to this illustration!

Art Process & Talk

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s video is both for an Art Talk and celebrating 100 subs on YouTube! I wanted to make an illustration reminicent of the very first video I put up so I used my markers and color pencils!

This week’s Art Talk is about Small (Daily) victories. I go into a lot more detail in the video, but whenever I’m stuck or frustrated with my art practice, I do smaller tasks that are related to it to keep going. I go over a few of them on this illustration’s Patreon post as a sort glimpse into my studio practice on a weekly basis. They’re not elaborate or particularly special, but they help in some way and motivate me to tackle the bigger art tasks or get over the creative slump.

Quick reminder that $1 Patrons get to see fresh content before anyone else and $5 Patrons get access to lineart and a monthly digital drawing!

Materials

  • Markers: COPIC, Block Studio, ChartPak and Faber Castell PITT
  • Prismacolor Colerase Pencils

Timelapse Tuesday #30: Consuming Feelings + Art Talk

Check out my Patreon for more content related to this illustration!

Art Process & Talk

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! Oh my God, 30 episodes this year!? Wow! Thank you so much for everyone who has watched, liked and read this weekly series of mine! It has been a wonderful challenge to create and keep up and I hope to continue going! I broke out of my routine and illustrated a male portrait instead!

This episode was more of a chance to talk to you all about how I take care of myself when I’m close to burning out. As a freelance artist, it’s important to create content like webcomic pages and videos, and promote it continuously along with building up commissions and shopkeeping. All these projects began to overwhelm me so I took a step back and reevaluated each one. I took stock of not just the positive impact of each one, but the tasks and workload they brought on.

I go over it during the video, but I made some changes to my content to avoid burning out. One good way I gauge if I’m burning out is by checking my weekly tasks on my Bullet Journal: if I see the same tasks transfer over a few week I will either finish them or check why they’re not done. I’m also trying to get into the habit of making a reset day that is just for relaxing and reseting myself (that doesn’t necessarily involve video games).

Thank you so much for reading and I’ll see you all for tonight’s Art Stream!

Timelapse Tuesday #25: Say it with flowers

Original is up for Sale! Click HERE for the shop link! I also have art commission slots available in this art style!

Art Process & Motivation

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s illustration was a chance to work with my art markers again after not recording a complete YouTube video on them in quite some time! I wanted to be playful and illustrate the phrase “Say it with Flowers” with even more blooms!

I talk about keeping art fun and changing things up from a more serious process to something that is still challenging. I chose to go with a more graphic or comic style because I like high contrasts in my marker art. I took a quick break from watercolors so I wouldn’t worry too much on the layering and focus on the selection of colors. I wanted to render everything softly so I used my pastel markers as tonal values and only added the brighter colors as midtowns as needed. Overall I’m very happy with this simple illustration and I hope to make more soon!

I also wanted to add some gold ink details to make it extra nice and plan for a metallic print in the near future. I’ve been on a gold ink kick since last Thursday’s Twitch Stream when I added warm gold ink on my newest Twitch illustration.

Timelapse Tuesday #24: Playful Magpie

No prints but I do have watercolor art commission slots available!

Art Motivation

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s topic came about while planning for a mixed media art piece and to encourage practice with materials you might have bought but never used. I understand how much an investment art making can be and sometimes we buy something we believe so precious that we don’t dare use it. I’m very much like that most of the time, especially with my watercolors and oils.

At first, I only used the student grade materials and didn’t try out anything beyond that, even though I had perfectly good artist’s grade materials just sitting in storage looking pretty. The main problem with this mindset is if I never practiced with the better supplies, I would never understand how they actually worked so I would be wasting more money just buying what I thought I could work instead of just doing it! Eventually I got over that fear of “wasting” my supplies when I changed my mindset to “Any art made is progress” and it’s helped me keep a positive outlook towards my own process.

I do hope this video helps you get over that doubt and gets you motivated to create more!

Comic Update 1.1.43!

Hi everyone it’s Comic Update day! Check it out on Tapastic & Smackjeeves! This week’s challenge was to show Daikonran’s willingness to apologize and help Secondet out regardless of who the angel is.

Part of the struggle I worked through on this page was feeling discouraged at my own comic. This page took far too long to finish because I was constantly over-analyzing the view/follow count and asking myself if it was worthwhile to keep working on this project. But it’s thanks to you, my readers on this blog, on Tapas and Smackjeeves, that I decided to continue on and keep on publishing it. Thank you so much! ♥

I’ll be working on extra content once the chapter is done, so if there’s something you’d like to know about Chapter 1 or of the comic, feel free to ask and I’ll draw it!

Timelapse Tuesday #22: Restless Remedy (Art Motivation)

No prints but I do have watercolor art commission slots available!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s video is the first in a long time that has voice over! I’ve decided to go with voice over because it’s more liberating to talk about the materials and has a little less editing time that I can focus on painting or planning streams! I’m trying to work more on my techniques and practice my fundamentals & motifs. I love how the layers look along with the few touches of ink and pencils. I wanted to explore fragmentation and Kintsukuroi the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with metals to create beautiful art.

Art Motivation

I got into a lot more detail in the video, but I wanted to talk about frustration and how perfectionism can contribute to it. In my experience, perfectionism is a double-edge sword: it helps me grow as an artist as well as keep me down. This particular sketchbook of mine is daunting because it’s not only large but, since it’s mixed media, I want to make the best I can make. After fighting against myself, I’ve decided to let go of perfection and just make art for its sake. I do my thumbnail sketches in my drawing pads or on my Bullet Journal, then transfer them to the sketchbook to paint on. I hope this video helps you in any way to keep making art!
