Timelapse Tuesday #25: Say it with flowers

Original is up for Sale! Click HERE for the shop link! I also have art commission slots available in this art style!

Art Process & Motivation

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s illustration was a chance to work with my art markers again after not recording a complete YouTube video on them in quite some time! I wanted to be playful and illustrate the phrase “Say it with Flowers” with even more blooms!

I talk about keeping art fun and changing things up from a more serious process to something that is still challenging. I chose to go with a more graphic or comic style because I like high contrasts in my marker art. I took a quick break from watercolors so I wouldn’t worry too much on the layering and focus on the selection of colors. I wanted to render everything softly so I used my pastel markers as tonal values and only added the brighter colors as midtowns as needed. Overall I’m very happy with this simple illustration and I hope to make more soon!

I also wanted to add some gold ink details to make it extra nice and plan for a metallic print in the near future. I’ve been on a gold ink kick since last Thursday’s Twitch Stream when I added warm gold ink on my newest Twitch illustration.

Timelapse Tuesday #24: Playful Magpie

No prints but I do have watercolor art commission slots available!

Art Motivation

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s topic came about while planning for a mixed media art piece and to encourage practice with materials you might have bought but never used. I understand how much an investment art making can be and sometimes we buy something we believe so precious that we don’t dare use it. I’m very much like that most of the time, especially with my watercolors and oils.

At first, I only used the student grade materials and didn’t try out anything beyond that, even though I had perfectly good artist’s grade materials just sitting in storage looking pretty. The main problem with this mindset is if I never practiced with the better supplies, I would never understand how they actually worked so I would be wasting more money just buying what I thought I could work instead of just doing it! Eventually I got over that fear of “wasting” my supplies when I changed my mindset to “Any art made is progress” and it’s helped me keep a positive outlook towards my own process.

I do hope this video helps you get over that doubt and gets you motivated to create more!

Comic Update 1.1.43!

Hi everyone it’s Comic Update day! Check it out on Tapastic & Smackjeeves! This week’s challenge was to show Daikonran’s willingness to apologize and help Secondet out regardless of who the angel is.

Part of the struggle I worked through on this page was feeling discouraged at my own comic. This page took far too long to finish because I was constantly over-analyzing the view/follow count and asking myself if it was worthwhile to keep working on this project. But it’s thanks to you, my readers on this blog, on Tapas and Smackjeeves, that I decided to continue on and keep on publishing it. Thank you so much! ♥

I’ll be working on extra content once the chapter is done, so if there’s something you’d like to know about Chapter 1 or of the comic, feel free to ask and I’ll draw it!

Timelapse Tuesday #22: Restless Remedy (Art Motivation)

No prints but I do have watercolor art commission slots available!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! This week’s video is the first in a long time that has voice over! I’ve decided to go with voice over because it’s more liberating to talk about the materials and has a little less editing time that I can focus on painting or planning streams! I’m trying to work more on my techniques and practice my fundamentals & motifs. I love how the layers look along with the few touches of ink and pencils. I wanted to explore fragmentation and Kintsukuroi the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with metals to create beautiful art.

Art Motivation

I got into a lot more detail in the video, but I wanted to talk about frustration and how perfectionism can contribute to it. In my experience, perfectionism is a double-edge sword: it helps me grow as an artist as well as keep me down. This particular sketchbook of mine is daunting because it’s not only large but, since it’s mixed media, I want to make the best I can make. After fighting against myself, I’ve decided to let go of perfection and just make art for its sake. I do my thumbnail sketches in my drawing pads or on my Bullet Journal, then transfer them to the sketchbook to paint on. I hope this video helps you in any way to keep making art!

See you in a few hours for tonight’s Art Stream!

Timelapse Tuesday #21: Pink Hair Buns Portrait

No prints for this week but I do have commission slots OPEN for this art style!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! It’s been rather gloomy these few days in the studio so I decided I’ll be going (mostly) digital, with the exception of Thursday’s Traditional Art Stream. To kick off this week, I decided use a very popular color palette challenge I encountered a while back, the FallenZephyr’s 100 palette challenge. I honestly tried to find a link of the original post but they apparently deleted the page. You can still find it if you google it by name though. I chose this particular palette to work within very pastel colors and challenge myself to render effectively.

I also wanted to try out this technique I found a while back for digital paintings. It was a way to use sketches or  lineart and airbrushing to quickly work on an idea and model faster. I struggle with getting past the line stage (I have so many WIPs it’s not funny) so any technique that can help me render better and faster is always welcomed. This technique helped plan out the colors and contrasts fairly quickly so I could concentrate on modeling the tonal values.

I also struggle a lot with coming up with concepts and full illustrations. I put so much pressure on myself to come up new illustrations that works and I can publish that I end up giving myself creative block or I’m unhappy with the results…either way I’m not as productive as I’d like. So I’ve resolved to sketch and practice more and publish my WIPs rather than go for perfection.

Materials

  • Clip Studio Paint Pro / Manga Studio 5
  • Wacom Bamboo Create

Comic Update 1.1.39!

Hi everyone it’s Comic Update day! Check it out on Tapastic & Smackjeeves! Secondet the angel finally gets some good news after a rough night. I wanted to create some dynamic panels so I cut up the action on the first panel into two. I really like how the action flowed and set up the next page’s big reveal!

Art (re)Motivation

Lately I’ve been struggling to find the inspiration to work on pages because I would like to focus more on painting and illustration. It’s deceptively easy to procrastinate pages when I’m thinking up of new pieces or video contents until the work just becomes too much and I rush things. It’s been an uphill trek trying to draw pages, paint and self-promote while dealing with the constant doubt and feeling mediocre at everything I make. It’s part of the “starting out as a freelance artist” package I suppose and that’s alright.

It’s thanks to my loved ones and you guys for reading the pages, looking at my art, be it illustrations or videos, and reading the blog that I do my best to pull myself out of the (seemingly) never-ending circle of self-doubt and deprecation. It makes me want to get myself out of that gloomy place and show up every day to make someone’s day just a little better. It makes me want to push my techniques as much as I can, accept failures as part of the learning process and keep on learning.

Thank you! ♥ I’ll see you all next week!

Timelapse Tuesday #18: Sea Anemones

Check this illustration on RedBubble HERE!

Art Process

Hi everyone and welcome back to Timelapse Tuesday! Sorry for the tardiness, it’s been a doozy! I actually had an oil painting video ready for editing…but it kind of sucked, so I decided to redo this week’s video for the sake of keeping up quality content. Maybe someday I’ll show it…or I’ll redo the painting once I get more practice in oils!

I was so frustrated with my artwork lately because I was drawing the same things over and over. So I decided to use reference and really buckle down on technique rather than concept. It’s important to always take time to look at what works and what doesn’t and practice as much as you can without having to show it all.

Digital Stream is Online!

Click on the picture or HERE to go to my art stream!  I’ll be working on one of the last pages of Chapter 1 so spoiler warning!

  • Watercolors: MIR Paints, Kuretake Gansai Tambi, Van Gogh, Daniel Smith
